Beauty Without Cruelty

Beauty Without Cruelty was founded in 1963 by the trustees of an animal welfare organization. Its goal was to manufacture and distribute natural, color cosmetics that were NOT tested on animals (as was the norm) and did NOT contain any animal ingredients. Beauty Without Cruelty developed the first full line of cruelty-free color cosmetics, and its work and mission changed the face of the cosmetics industry forever.1

“According to statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), more than half of the 1.4 million animals counted by the USDA feel pain from the experiments performed by cosmetic companies.”2 But technological advances have made animal testing both unnecessary and less reliable than tests done with computers.

“‘The tests performed typically measure the levels of skin irritancy, eye tissue damage, and toxicity caused by various substances used in cosmetics,'” all of which can be done using computers and donated tissue, cell and skin samples, and simulated models. Companies that still test on animals perform these same types of tests on live animals, causing extreme pain and death.3 Consumers can help change these practices by purchasing from companies like Beauty Without Cruelty that refuse to test on animals.

I’ve been using Beauty Without Cruelty’s Aromatherapy Hair Care Daily Benefits Shampoo and Conditioner for about six months, and I love it. I wash my hair once every two to three days, and it is soft and shiny and never feels weighed down with residue. I was excited when Beauty Without Cruelty offered to let me try the Aromatherapy Hair Care Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner – I knew that as the days got cooler, my hair would start getting much drier. My hair is always full of static in the fall and winter months, and I’ve never been able to find the right products to keep it under control without making it feel greasy or heavy.

I must admit, I was a little nervous about what the Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner would smell like. Rosemary and tea tree oil can both have very strong, distinct smells, but I was pleasantly surprised at the mild scent of the shampoo and conditioner – both right from the bottle and after my hair dries. I’ve been using the products for the past two weeks while the temperature has dropped, and so far I am completely satisfied with the result. I have not noticed any change in my hair’s health or feel, nor have I experienced any problems with static. Granted, the very dry days of winter have yet to descend, but I’m hopeful.

Both styles of Beauty Without Cruelty Shampoo and Conditioner I have used (Daily Benefits and Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Oil) score a nice, low 1 or 2 according to EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.4 That means their overall health concerns are at the very low end of EWG’s scale.

Beauty Without Cruelty was very generous in donating recently to help me make “welcome bags” for the Natural Parents Network volunteers who met in Kansas City. Each volunteer received a sample size of the Rosemary Mint Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. Here is what some of the volunteers had to say about them:

Laura from WaldenMommy found unexpected benefits: “I’ve used the shampoo and conditioner a couple of times and I really like them both! I think the shampoo rinses cleaner. My hair was less greasy/oily when I used it than when I use my normal shampoo. I love how soft the conditioner made my hair. As an added bonus, my scalp is less itchy than it was before!”

Tom’s of Maine

Tom and Kate Chappell began creating natural family care products in 1970. Their philosophy: that their products would not harm the environment. Tom’s of Maine’s “Statement of Beliefs” reflects this commitment to a respect for the environment, but it also extends to their employees and communities. Even after it became part of the Colgate-Palmolive Company in 2006, Tom’s of Maine has striven to use high-quality ingredients that are sourced in nature and subject to minimal processing, to improve their sustainability practices, and to maximize the recycled and recyclable content of Tom’s of Maine products and packaging.5

The Stewardship Model for Tom’s of Maine means that the company uses ingredients that are free of artificial preservatives, colors, sweeteners, flavors, fragrances, and other additives; free of animal ingredients; sourced in nature; subject to limited processing; and organically grown when possible and practical. They do not test their products on animals, they promote sustainable harvesting practices, and they strive to be accountable to present and future generations through sustainable manufacturing and packaging practices.6

I have been using the Tom’s of Maine Clean Mint Toothpaste and Wicked Fresh Mouthwash for the past month, and I am very happy – especially with the toothpaste. Before switching to Clean Mint, I was using a major brand’s “sensitive” toothpaste formula. I was nervous that my gums would be more sensitive without my super expensive brand, but I have not noticed any increase in pain or sensitivity.

Both the toothpaste and the mouthwash have very subtle minty flavors – in fact the mouthwash almost starts with more of a sweet taste (possibly due to the xylitol in the ingredient list). The mouthwash is so mild that it does not burn my mouth, and it leaves absolutely no medicinal aftertaste like some brands do.

My one regret in this review is that I cannot give you a full opinion on the deodorant. As you may know from reading my site, I am pregnant. Pregnancy brings with it some odd side effects sometimes from the extra hormones racing through our bodies, and one of my side effects is increased sweat production. To put it bluntly, I stink, and I haven’t found a good natural deodorant (or a chemical-laden one for that matter) to combat it. So while I can report that the Long Lasting Deodorant smells wonderful (I got the lavender scent), it has not had a positive effect on my pregnancy-induced smell. Fortunately for me, no one in my family seems to mind!

All of the Tom’s of Maine products in today’s review score a 2 or 3 according to EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.7 Again, that means their overall health concerns are at the low end of EWG’s scale.

Jorje from Momma Jorje wrote about her experiences with the adult toothpaste: “It was interesting. I didn’t notice any extreme flavor, not much flavor at all, but there was this hint that there was some serious mint there. Like it made my mouth minty fresh, but without any sort of stinging or over-flavoring. Does that make sense? I would really love to try their Spearmint-ice! I love Spearmint. Also, my teeth felt clean.”

Laura from WaldenMommy enjoys Tom’s for her sensitive teeth: “The toothpaste has a faint mint taste that is not overpowering or sticky. It is gentle on my very sensitive teeth and rinses clean without a gritty residue. Due to some past dental work, I have hyper sensitive teeth and gums and normally use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. I think I could replace my special toothpaste with Tom’s without a problem!”

Rebekah from Liberated Family shares: “I appreciate that the children’s toothpaste is fluoride-free. My kids are really enjoying it. The ingredients are simple and very nice.” Rebekah would prefer, however, that the adult toothpaste also came in a fluoride-free option.8

Lauren from Hobo Mama shares: “My four-year-old, Mikko, can be very picky about toothpaste, but even though he realized I’d given him a different kind from his usual, he didn’t protest it. He’s brushed his teeth with it several times now, and I’ve tried it out as well. Unlike the overly sweet typical kids’ toothpastes, the Tom’s strawberry is very mild and nearly tasteless. I appreciate that it doesn’t have a lot of questionable additives and sweeteners. I will definitely keep it on hand for when my baby grows some teeth! This may be at odds with some other crunchy folk, but I can’t use this tube of Tom’s kids’ toothpaste for Mikko most of the time since the one I have doesn’t have fluoride. Mikko has severe teeth problems and we’re using topical fluoride on the advice of his pediatric dentist. Tom’s does make a fluoride variety for kids, however, so I’ll look for that.”
