One Response to Introducing Native American Culture to Children

Great idea! I actually am loving that the historical thanksgiving story really shows how ill prepares the colonists were and how generous and helpful the Native Americans they initially enountered were. The actual history in our area between Native Americans and settlers was not so amicable, so the depictions in our local museums of atrocities committed by both sides tend to be somewhat difficult to discuss with a preschooler who does not yet know about things like property rights vs nomadic communal societies, raiding parties, scalping, manifest destiny, polio infested blankets, genocide, etc. 🙁
So I’m definitely taking the opportunity to use library books etc to talk about the more positive encounters!
