Introduction to Homeopathic Medicine

This last round of teething has done a number on our little family. We’ve had our share of sleepless nights, lots of snuggling, and a plethora of teething tricks. After using our amber teething necklace and cold washcloths, I always dosed up some acetaminophen, especially at night.

Homeopathy Remedies
It’s heartbreaking to hear your child moaning in pain, and I just wanted a quick fix. But, after two to three nights in a row, I knew I needed to find an alternative. I began researching children’s homeopathic medicine, and I’m so pleased with what I’ve learned! I’m not at all an expert and hope this bit of information can be a starting place for you to do your own research and discuss your findings with your primary care physician.

Rather than run to the store at the first sign of distress, I opted to purchase a starter kit especially for children. It included Aconite, Arnica, Belladonna, Chamomilla, Ferrum Phos., and Hepar Sulph., each in 30X. Here’s a short summary of what each can be used for:

ACONITE (Aconitum Napellus) – fever (sudden), fright, cough (croup-like), hoarseness, colic, and restlessness.

ARNICA (Arnica Montana) – bruises, falls, blows, black eyes, and sore muscles.

BELLADONNA - fever (sudden violent onset), headache, earache, sore throat, and colic.

CHAMOMILLA - fever, earache, teething troubles, temper, and vomiting.

FERRUM PHOSPHORICUM – fever (gradual), headache, earache, sore throat (early stage), and cough (dry).

HEPAR SULPH. CALC. - cough, croup, hoarseness, colds, sore throat, abscesses, boils, and cold sores.

The small white tablets easily dissolve in your child’s mouth and if your child is very tiny, the tablets can be dissolved in water or breastmilk and then administered. Always be sure to shake the tablets into the bottle’s cap rather than pouring them directly into your hand. This protects the tablets and insures they are not contaminated. Last, but not least, in terms of dose, a 30X homeopathic is quite low and appropriate for most circumstances. Higher doses are available directly from a licensed health care provider.

I am still such a beginner in exploring this portion of natural parenting, but am excited to learn more! We’ve had noticeable success with Chamomilla for teething and I have my kit at the ready for any signs of illness to come.

Have you tried homeopathic medicine with your children? Please share your experience and any additional resources you are aware of!

  1. Great post! I have used homeopathy with my kids (now 6 and 4) since they were babies and with my second one, even during pregnancy. I rely on it heavily for both first aid (which I do myself) and for more general ‘constitutional’ health (which I work with a homeopath for) and although it takes some time to get the hang of it, I find it an invaluable therapy :-)

  2. Thanks for the helpful info! I’ve often wondered about homeopathy and am just starting to collect more information about it.

  3. Thanks so much. I’ve been interested in learning more about homeophathic remedies instead of pulling Tylenol {or another medication} immediately with pain or a fever.
