After six months to a year of trying to conceive with no success it is quite common for couples to start reaching out for help from the doctors and family or friends who have been down the road of infertility. 

As if the world of trying to conceive wasn’t confusing enough, there are also many terms and abbreviations that you may hear or see written when you delve into this world.

Here is a mini dictionary of some of my favourites that seem to come up over and over again!


AF – Aunt Flo – Menstrual Cycle
AH, AZH – Assisted Hatching
AHI – At-home Insemination (Most often in reference to donor sperm)
AI – Artificial Insemination (Most often in reference to donor sperm)
ART – Assisted Reproductive Technology


BA – Baby Aspirin (Prescribed as part of IVF protocol)
BABY DUST – Good wishes vibe for getting pregnant
BBTBasal Body Temperature
BC – Birth Control
BD – Baby Dance (intercourse)
BFN – Big Fat Negative (Negative Pregnancy Test)
BFP – Big Fat Positive! (Positive Pregnancy Test)


CD – Cycle Day
CF – Cervical Fluid
CM – Cervical Mucus
CP – Cervical Position

DA – Dear Angel
DH – Dear Husband
DD – Dear Daughter
DP – Dear Partner
DS – Dear Son
DPO – Days Post-Ovulation
DPR – Days Post-Retrieval
DPT – Days Post-Transfer

EDD – Estimated Due Date

HSG – Hysterosalpingogram (Dye test to ensure fallopian tubes are clear)

ICSI – Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection
IF – Infertility
IUI – Intra-uterine Insemination

LAP – Laparoscopy
LH – Luteinizing Hormone
LMP – Last Menstrual Period (startdate)
LP – Luteal Phase
LPD – Luteal Phase Defect

MC, m/c – Miscarriage

NAK – Nursing At Keyboard


O – Ovulation, Ovulated
OB – Obstetrician
OB/GYN – Obstetrician/Gynecologist
OPK – Ovulation Predictor Kit
OPT – Ovulation Predictor Test


PCOS – Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
PG – Pregnant
POAS – Pee on a stick (Home Pregnancy Test)


RE – Reproductive Endocrinologist
RI – Reproductive Immunologist

SA – Semen Analysis


TTC – Trying To Conceive
TWW – Two week wait (also 2WW)
TR – Tubal Reversal

U/S – Ultrasound

WNL – Within Normal Limits (used in reference to blood tests)
